ISM Manufacturing Index Soars To 14-Year High
Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in August, and the overall economy grew for the 112th consecutive month, the highest since May 2004, as orders, production and employment all picked up, offering a positive sign for the economy even as trade tensions weigh on the outlook.
According to the August Report On Business® from the Institute for Supply Management (ISM)®, the factory index unexpectedly jumped 3.2 points to 61.3, exceeding all estimates. (Readings above 50 indicate expansion.)
Comments from the panel of the nation's supply chain executives reflect continued expanding business strength. Demand remains strong, with the New Orders Index at 60 percent or above for the 16th straight month, and the customers’ inventories Index remaining low.
