Digital Transformation is a People Issue
Digital transformation has evolved into something much bigger than investing in a piece of automation equipment to rachet up a particularly plodding task. Work is changing, artificial intelligence is opening up possibilities and hierarchies are flattening as information-sharing across roles becomes the difference between understanding your customer or process and being snuffed out by a competitor.
Organizational and cultural issues are often the biggest impediments to digital transformation in manufacturing, not the technology itself, according to Intel researchers Irene Petrick and Faith McCreary. "Workers want to be involved early, they think they should be involved early, and believe they have a lot to contribute from a knowledge perspective about the processes," says Petrick.

60% of Companies Plan Warehouse Automation to Ease Labor Woes
To keep up with the growth of an on-demand economy, 87% of companies report that they are currently in the process of or planning to expand the size of their warehouses by 2024, according to a new study by Zebra Technologies.
The study also found that 77% of respondents agree that augmenting workers with technology is the best way to introduce automation in the warehouse, but only 35% have a clear understanding of where to start automating.
A recent IndustryWeek highlights these and other key findings from the Zebra study. Click here to read the complete article and learn how automation will enhance worker performance and operations in the warehouse.

10 Ways IoT Can Improve Supply Chains
Blockchain and IoT are defining the future of supply chains based on the initial success of Proof of Concept (POC) pilots focused on the logistics, storage, and track-and-trace areas of supply chains across manufacturing. Supply-chain centric pilots are the most popular today, with enterprises looking at how they can get more value out of IoT using blockchain.
A CIO at one manufacturing company deliberately spins up several POCs at once, stating “they’re our proving grounds, we’re pushing blockchain and IoT’s limits to see if they can solve our most challenging supply chain problems and we’re learning a tremendous amount.”

How to Streamline Supply Chains and Improve Production Efficiency with Track and Trace
Supply chains are the lifeblood of any manufacturing business. Reducing and eliminating risks while increasing supply chains’ speed, scale, and efficiency are how track-and-trace applications help manufacturers grow.
Track-and-trace provides manufacturers with data and insights to:
- Take action on quality and customer issues before they become a costly problem
- Improve production and process quality
- Ensure high levels of inventory accuracy and forecasting precision
- Troubleshoot supplier quality problems to avert larger challenges
- Reduce expenses associated with poor quality, scrap and rework
